Just a little note to remind everyone about our concrete barriers which have become very popular. We are currently working on a new design which we hope to have into production within the next couple of months. It will be along the same lines as the current barrier but it will have some very useful additions….there will be more details posted as things develop.

The current barriers are ideal for blocking off private land and driveways. They are a very economical solution and they can either be purchased or hired. Hiring can be very useful for short-term use of the barriers. The concrete barriers are delivered on a hiab or moffett vehicle so they can be placed and positioned for you, which means you don’t need to have suitable machinery on site.

The units themselves are 1.8 tonne and are 2500mm long. They come with forkholes underneath to allow you to move them around….as long as you have suitable machinery. Check out the website for more details, or give us a call.

Just thought I would drop a quick note on the blog about our grain walling panels and the different options available. The panels have become very popular for grain stores as they are quick to install, are very robust and easy to seal up. The panels are tongue and groove fitting and so can be placed on top of each other to get up to the desired height. Once you start getting over 4000mm in height you need to start reducing the panel length or possibly increase the panel thickness. For advice on this just ask one of our sales team.

The grain walling panels are normally taken off the lorry using a forklift or telehandler. They are then placed into position using lifting shackles, and then clipped to the front of the steels using bolts and plates. The panels can also go inside the web of the steel if required. Once the panels are in place a polyurethane mastic is used to seal all of the joints.

The speed of installation of the concrete panels is a massive advantage over something like block work.

For more information on our grain walling options please get in touch.

With the news recently that the construction industry in the UK contracted by over 4% in Q1 of 2011, it seems the much anticipated upturn is still evading us. Precast concrete is obviously closely tied to the construction industry and so it is bound to have knock on effects; over the last couple of years there have been some very large players in the market who have either closed down or gone out of business.

The hope has to be that the doldrums cannot continue forever and sooner or later things will start to look a little more rosy. One thing that is likely to dampen those expectations is the current fiscal tightening by the government. This is bound to have an impact on the construction industry, the question will be how quickly can the private sector pick up, in order to soften the blow? Let’s hope it’s not too long!

Spring has barely arrived but given the snowfall we have had in the last two winters, many organisations are thinking ahead to next winter. Salt storage is a hot topic and places such as airports and councils need to make sure they don’t get caught out next winter.

Salt barns can be constructed in a number of ways, and precast concrete allows a variety of options. The corrosive nature of salt also means concrete is an ideal material to be using. The concrete panels can be attached to the front of steels, and as long as they are correctly installed and sealed then they will keep the salt away from the steels. The other alternative is to use the L shape retaining walls inside the building, these are ideal for creating bunkers and keeping the salt awy from the skin and frame of the building.

For more information on the various options please give us a call and we’ll happily advise.

We have recently launched a new page on our website detailing our heavy duty retaining wall, please look on our retaining walls page. This is ideal for situations where loads are excessive and there is an additional surcharge. It works well in waste transfer stations where push walls are required that are going to take impacts from machinery.

The units go up to 4000mm in height and offer a cost saving alternative to casting walls in situ. Recent jobs with the walls have included retaining walls next to highways where there is a considerable surcharge. The units are normally cast into a concrete foundation slab, although there is the option to bolt them down to a foundation.

For more information on this or to check out our full range of precast concrete products, please visit the website.

JP now have a great selection of retaining walls which are suitable for a variety of uses. The range includes concrete panels, L shape bolt down and cast in situ walls, and freestanding walls.

The different types of precast walls all have different uses; ranging from silage clamps to wast storage centres. The concrete panels are most often used in an agricutural setting; silage clamps, slurry stores, grain stores, general walling, and earth retention. They are used in industrial buildings as well and in waste transfer stations, often for push walls.

The L shape units tend to be used more in general construction and civil engineering projects. They are ideal for general retaining walls, salt barns, waste transfer stations. They are also used in agricultural setting such as grain walls, silage clamps and slurry stores.

The freestanding walls, by their nature, have more limited uses. They tend to be mostly used in grain stores and waste transfer stations. Once the pressure on these units reaches a certain point, they do need to be fixed down.

For more information on our range of precast concrete and retaining walls, please get in touch.

The UK housing market continues to stumble along – new figures out have shown that both mortgage approvals and house prices have fallen. The Bank of England has commented that the number of mortgages approved for houe prices showed sudden dip in December.

The Nationwide Building Society said house prices had slipped by 0.1 percent in January; this leaves them down 1.1 percent on a year earlier. It meant the average UK home cost just over £161,600.

With the prospect of interest rises in the coming year, house prices are not likley to be going up anytime soon.

House building firms have shown some promising results in the last year and hopefully that will continue. Precast concrete firms have also felt the pinch from the dip in the housing market, the hope is that things will continue to steadily improve.

Just been reading a recent post on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12239233 which makes rather grim reading. Key highlights include:

Forceast that the rise in VAT to 20% will cost 7,500 jobs in the sector.

One third of builders firms are expecting to reduce staff numbers over the next 12 months – as output continues to fall.

Government cuts, particulalry those in social housing will cuase considerable pain.

If the predictions are correct then this will the fourth consecutive year of recession for the construction sector. Last year saw a large number of firms sucumbe to administration or bankruptcy, and some very large firms as well. This story is likley to continue, for the short term at least.

Let’s hope that things turn out a little better than predicted!
